Not to be confused with nearby Hampton or Hampton Wick, Hampton Hill is a vibrant and distinctive area with a character all its own. While most people living in Hampton Hill will be aware of the following, if you are planning to move to there and would like to know a little more about the area, we hope the following notes will be useful.

Originally common land used for cattle grazing, the area began to take shape in the late 18th century. A windmill, constructed in the 1780s, was used to grind locally grown corn and grain. By the late 1870s, the windmill had been demolished, and the area saw significant population growth. In 1890, it was officially named Hampton Hill—having previously been known as The Common and New Hampton. While there’s no prominent hill to be found, the name reflected the area’s location on slightly elevated ground above the Thames flood plain.

Today, Hampton Hill retains its village atmosphere while supporting a thriving local economy. A number of long-standing, independent businesses continue to serve the community, including Park Gate Joinery, Burt’s Cycles, Robsons Butchers – where the ever-enthusiastic Zach is ready to assist – and the much-loved Hampton Hill Theatre, a cultural cornerstone of the area.

Since 1964, the Hampton Hill Association has played a central role in representing the interests of residents, supporting local initiatives, and helping to preserve the area’s unique character. You can find out more about their work at hamptonhillassociation.co.uk.

Much of Hampton Hill High Street, along with parts of the surrounding residential streets, is designated as a conservation area, recognising its historical and architectural significance and ensuring its charm is preserved for future generations.
